Slowly is beautiful
Hi there! We who sew
patchwork, handquilt and appliqué haven't chosen the quickest or most profitable hobby in
the world
But few people seem to understand that. Time and again it strikes me that
arts and crafts, pictures, quilts as well as needlework made in textile are valued
considerably lower than they deserve compared to pottery and above all painting and
engraving. Some techniques in pottery and carved engravings do take time to make and cost
to produce,
but they hardly spend as many months as we do working with tapestry or quilts
of a certain size and artistic level. If more men worked with textiles, we might see a
breakthrough for higher prices and greater recognition than what is the case now. It's no
excuse that our work is done in our spare time, that it's "only" a passion and a
hobby. We take a stand for what we are creating; we're not even capable of a bit careless
negligence with our quilts. I believe we're on the right track when it comes to respect
recognition and increased interest in quilting and related textile techniques. Therefore,
let's not concede with our views on what we do. Quality and professional pride must walk
hand in hand with joy over a hobby that enriches our lives so much.
