Fruits for future generations
Frequent discussions on the essence of
art and what art really is have not given us the straightforward answers yet. Exhibitions
provoke and disappoint us; sometimes they fill us with joy.
At our own quiltshows in the Norwegian Quilting Association comments are heard among
quilters and visitors; some exhibits are named artquilt and others needlework. An object
made in oil on canvas, tapestry, patchwork or charcoal drawings showing a specific
landscape, is that art? An abstract peace of creative work claiming to be a specific
landscape, is that art?
Many want to call themselves artist, not all of them should. Being a skilled
patchworker and quilter, perhaps with an artistic talent, indicates a true artist or an
excellent artisan. Both deserve recognition for high quality work. One of them is not
necessarily an artist.
I cannot and will not define what art is, but merely give you a thought for the road:
Art is work coming from the artist's inner life and mind, where the artist's creativity is
united with techincal and skillfull knowledge of the material used. An artist is also
inspired by surroundings, by music, art created by others and experiences. The artist
turns these impressions into an artistic expression. Work that survives and remains in
high esteem through centuries is one example. How much of all that's invented and created
in our own time will survive and thrill also in the years to come? In the field of
quilting there is no doubt that a lot is made right now for future generations to enjoy
and admire whether it's needlework or art.
